My First 100 Words in French and English (A Pull-The-Tab Language Book) Faulkner, Keith Little Simon 1998 0671864475 Board book VG; Minor tear top of spine 1/3 Book Weight (Lbs/Oz); 11.3 x 8.9 x 0.6 inches; 16 pages; From School Library JournalPreSchool-Grade 3-This colorful volume has five scenes (farm, store, park, town, home) with tabs that, when pulled, change the words from English to French. Children will enjoy operating them as they test themselves (and others) , and the book will also be helpful in bilingual programs. The illustrations are clear and attractive and represent several races (although the secretaries portrayed are all female, and at home Mother sets the table while Father reads the newspaper) . The contents are definitely limited; colors, numbers, body parts, greetings, etc. , are not included. Still, the definitions are generally accurate, with a few exceptions: les boissons, defined as "sodas, " actually means "drinks"; a soccer ball is le ballon, not la balle; a policeman is l'agent de police, not le policier. A pronunciation guide gives readers an idea of how the words sound in French. Unfortunately, the vitally important nasal n is poorly represented. The authors are also off the mark in transliterati ons of several other words, particularly bonbon, cerf-volant, and fille. Overall, however, this is an enjoyable glimpse of the language. . Ann W. Moore, Schenectady County Public Library, NY. Copyright 1993 Reed Business Information, Inc. . Book Description. Learning a foreign language has never been this much fun! Just pull the sturdy tabs and change the words under the pictures from English to French and back again to English! Price:

Atlas of American History Ferrell, Robert H. and Richard Natkiel World Publications Group, Inc. 2001 1572152826 Hardcover NF/VG 2/7 Book Weight (Lbs/Oz); 192 pages; From the Publisher. The completely revised and updated fourth edition of the Atlas of American History boasts comprehensive coverage of our nation's history, from its earliest European settlements to the 1992 presidential election. This critically-acc laimed cartographic reference offers insightful perspective on a wide range of topics. . . From The Critics. Library Journal. This might well have been entitled Atlas of American Military History , since military matters predominate. The whole of American history is lucidly condensed into a mere 35 pages of narrative text, which is expanded by map and picture captions. This conciseness will force users to seek elaboration of events in other works. Some of the maps have been used previously, as in Natkiel's Atlas of Maritime History . While the maps themselves are crisply drawn, the multicolor format has not photocopied well, and the arbitrary shading for land or water is confusing. The three-page index is inadequate. The primary use of this volume will be to udate aging historical atlas collections. James Moffet, Baldwin P. L. , Birmingham, Mich. . Booknews. Focuses almost exclusively on warfare, both domestic and foreign, with some information on colonization and expansion. The 200 maps, most in color, are accompanied by drawings and photographs. Sections such as Founding a Nation, Imperial Democracy, and The Two World Wars, are introduced by essays. First published in 1993 by Brompton Books in Greenwich, CT, and here updated to include the invasion of Panama, Desert Storm, and the 1992 presidential election. No bibliography. Annotation c. A Night At the Opera: an Irreverent Guide to the Plots, the Singers, the Composers, the Recordings Forman, Denis Sir Random House September 19, 1995 0679445536 Hardcover VG+/VG Book Weight (Lbs/Oz); 9.6 x 6.4 x 1.8 inches; 959 pages; Amazon--. As a nuts-and-bolts operagoer's guide, Denis Forman's book is richly incisive. It's equally satisfying as a tart, effervescent take on the solemn world of opera. . The author--a British television executive and former deputy chairman of the Royal Opera House--covers most of the likely offerings of your local repertory company, with a few questionable omissions (Peter Grimes) and inclusions (The Threepenny Opera) . For each he provides a synopsis, musical highlights, critical remarks, and historical information (the premiere of Il Trovatore: "stupendous"; that of Norma: "a flop") . Another section offers comments on everything from the craze for authenticity to the practice of booing. . Forman's opinions sometimes run athwart of convention. Falstaff "has no sex appeal and no heart, and opera demands both these qualities"; Tristan und Isolde is the creation of "the Wagner that liked to spend time stroking velvet. " His tone, especially in the synopses, is often evocative of Anna Russell's opera parodies: "It really is too bad of you Tristan to die on me like this. She passes out. " . The prose can be cute, but that fits Forman's approach of puncturing the inflated atmosphere of opera while glorying in it. Though he is most entertaining when he's daring to shout in church, his enthusiasms are as illuminating as his barbs. "Traviata is the first grown-up opera about contemporary life, " he says, adroitly locating that work in operatic history. In Don Giovanni, "Mozart brought terror to the opera stage for the first time. " It's the book's greatest pleasure that Forman's passion is matched by his knowledge. --David Olivenbaum . --This text refers to the . Paperback. Edition. . From Booklist. The author, a former deputy chairman of the Royal Opera House, may well become the Anna Russell of print with this irreverent guide to plots, singers, composers, and recordings of more than 80 operas. . Forman's criteria for selection is that of recorded popularity--the opera must have had three or more versions listed in the Gramophone CD catalog of December 1992. Operas are alphabetically arranged from the backstage tragedy Adriana Lecouvreur to the psychiatric tragedy, Wozzeck. All are described in degrees of irreverence and are also rated--from alpha-plus to gamma. Also included is a description of the cast, running time, and a unique commentary on the major arias, described as "Look Out For, " with the maximum of a three-star rating awarded "at the whim of the author. " The arias are listed in "minutes from start. " Notes, news and gossip, and a comment section complete the entries. The book concludes with a dictionary of opera terms; brief biographies of composers, conductors, and singers; and an index. . Although there is much in this volume that might be considered sacrilegious by the serious opera aficionado, Forman's style is humorous, entertaining, and insightful- -Hansel and Gretel is said to be loved in Munich because of its "Grimm Teutonic nature. " Originally published in Britain in 1994 as the Good Opera Guide, A Night at the Opera belongs in all music reference collections. It will balance the serious, weighty tomes and perhaps spark an interest in opera for those who think it dull and boring. Price:

How We Choose to be Happy: the 9 Choices of Extremely Happy People : Their Secrets, Their Stories Foster, Rick Putnam Pub Group April 1999 0399144609 Hardcover NF/NF 1/14 Book Weight (Lbs/Oz); 0.5 x 5.5 x 8.8 inches; 227 pages; From Library Journal. Foster and Hicks conduct workshops internationally in the development of interpersonal skills. For this book, they interviewed happy people from all walks of life, from the United States to Eastern Europe. The resulting personal stories, writing exercises, and quotes together inform and instruct the reader in the nine principles discovered by the authors in their travels. Foster and Hicks use their nine choices to teach leadership development in the corporate world and also as a diagnostic tool for medical doctors. These choices include the active intention to be happy, accountability, identifying needs and desires, and centralizing goals by creating a dream list. These are followed by recasting (looking at experiences in positive ways) , exploring options, appreciating every day, the art of giving, and, finally, exploring truthfulness. Similar to Sarah Ban Breathnach's Simple Abundance (Warner, 1995) and the Chicken Soup for the Soul books, this is recommended for public libraries and consumer health collections. ? Lisa S. Wise, Broome Cty. P. L. , Binghamton, NY. Copyright 1999 Reed Business Information, Inc. . . Book Description. What are the secrets of happiness? Which traits or habits do happy people share? Damon Lee Fowler's New Southern Baking: Classic Flavors for Today's Cook Fowler, Damon Lee Simon & Schuster September 27, 2005 0743250583 Hardcover AN; Minor cover crimp front rear 2/4 Book Weight (Lbs/Oz); Remainder; 9.4 x 7.4 x 1.5 inches; 384 pages; From Publishers Weekly. Starred Review. Cookbook author and food historian Fowler believes "each recipe tells a story. " Happily for readers, the author of Classical Southern Cooking and New Southern Kitchen is an excellent storyteller. With focused intensity and depth of knowledge, Fowler presents a rich, colorful and amusing overview of Southern baking from historical, cultural and social perspectives. In engaging prose, Damon traces the influences of Southern mamas; African-American domestic workers and cooks; English, German and French settlers; and Native Americans in his introduction, while his chapter openers delve deeper into specifics, distinguishing between, say, soft winter wheat and red summer wheat and the different flours derived from them. Educational and enticing recipes for quick breads, cookies, cakes, pies, pastries and breads include detailed instructions and tips. The stories, appearing mostly in the recipes' head notes, range from personal to technical, detailing, for example, the origins of Mrs. Hill's Crumpets, small, airy, yeast-leavened buns derived from an 1867 cookbook; Pecan Upside-Down Cake, a cross between upside-down cakes (derived from French tarte tatin) and monkey bread (a sweet, pecan-studded biscuit) ; and the secret to MaMa's moist Coconut Cake (from Fowler's maternal grandmother) . This cookbook is a treat, equally satisfying to cook from or to read. Photos. . Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. . . From Booklist. This compendium of southern baking will make a welcome addition to any cookbook collection on either side of the Mason-Dixon Line. Fowler has taken great pains to update traditional recipes, paying special attention to the cooking of the Carolina and Georgia coasts. Fowler's learned yet practical introduction carefully distinguishes the basic ingredients that give southern baked goods their uniqueness. His explanations of the art of biscuit making go about as far as possible to unravel biscuits' simple intricacies without having a baker actually at one's elbow. A selection of corn breads includes airy, souffle-like spoon bread. Fowler revives an heirloom recipe for rice bread. His assortment of pound cakes features a bourbon-brown sugar version destined to become a classic. Pies come in both sweet and savory versions, along with several exemplars of indigenous chess pies. That southern staple, the peanut, appears in both cookies and pies. An extensive bibliography cites more than a few community-based cookbooks that date back to the beginning of the twentieth century. Very Big Sharks Gentle, Victor Gareth Stevens Publishing January 2001 0836828283 Library Binding VG+/NONE; Owner's name in pencil on flyleaf 0/9 Book Weight (Lbs/Oz); 8 x 7.2 x 0.3 inches; 24 pages; From School Library Journal. Grade 2-4-Each of these slim volumes has a page of text facing a full-color photograph. Baby Sharks provides a clear explanation of the three different kinds of embryo development found among sharks and describes how the young survive on their own from the time of birth. Chasing Sharks and Killer Sharks, Killer People attempt to dispel the unwarranted fears people hold about potential attacks. They also introduce various products made from parts of sharks. What is mystifying is why these two books weren't combined into a single, more substantial volume. Shark Camouflage and Armor explores the topics identified in its title. The remaining two books offer brief introductions to various sharks and their relatives, information that can be found in many beginning books on the subject. There is a great deal of overlap among all of these titles. Most of the Web addresses are current, although locating the information relevant to sharks is not always straightforward. Libraries with other basic books about sharks may want to assess the need for additional resources on the subject. Most of the topics covered here can be found in Brett Westwood's Great White Shark (RSVP, 2000) and Susan Brocker's Sharks (Forest House, 1998) . . Kathy Piehl, Minnesota State University, Mankato . Skywoman: Legends of the Iroquois George-Kanentiio, Douglas M. Clear Light Books July 1998 0940666995 Hardcover VG+/NONE 1/11 Book Weight (Lbs/Oz); 10.1 x 8.9 x 0.5 inches; 108 pages; From School Library Journal. Grade 4-8? Shenandoah-Tekalihwa: khwa and George-Kanentiio retell nine traditional Iroquois tales. In a series of creation stories, readers learn how Skywoman fell from the world above, how the animals spread mud on the back of a turtle to catch her and the Earth was born, how the moon was formed, and how human beings were created. Other tales describe the origin of the dancing star constellation and of the evergreen. One selection tells "How the Bear Clan Became Healers" and another describes a sea creature in Lake Ontario. Full-color single- and double-page spreads and black-and-w hite pen-and-ink drawings depict the action and provide cultural details. The dignity and clarity so much a part of Native American storytelling are evident in this volume. Joseph Bruchac has included some of the stories in his Iroquois Stories (Crossing, 1985) and Native American Stories (Fulcrum, 1991) . Although the selections in Skywoman subtly work in Iroquois traditions, there is no introduction explaining Iroquois history or customs and no source notes are provided. Still, the combination of solid writing and evocative artwork make this book a worthwhile purchase for libraries needing additional Native American legends. ? In her 10th adventure, the observant and unflappable Mrs. P. Discovers a young woman hiding in a closet of her Connecticut home on the same day that she observes a suspicious white van patrolling the neighborhood. Kadi Hopkirk says the men in the van have been following her ever since she met Sammy, a childhood friend from the African country of Ubangiba, in New Haven, where he told her he was being guarded and secretly gave something for safekeeping. Mrs. Pollifax hides Kadi in the car and takes to the highway but is unable to shake the van until she calls on two former colleagues at the CIA, who send a helicopter to whisk them away to a traveling carnival in rural Maine. Mrs. Pollifax, last seen in Mrs. Pollifax and the Second Thief (1994) , poses as a journalist, and Kadi becomes the lower half of the woman who is sawed in two, while the CIA pals find out who Sammy is and why he is being so heavily guarded. Like a magician pulling a rabbit from a hat, Gilman, a deft stylist, adroitly resolves her plot's mysteries, finally bringing together a stabbing at the carnival, Kadi and Sammy's story and the abduction of a wealthy executive. Mrs. Pollifax (Mrs. Pollifax and the Second Thief, Fawcett: Ballantine, 1994) discovers a young woman in her hall closet hiding from some men in a white van. Eager as always, she elicits the girl's story, eludes the villains, and enables the CIA to resolve the situation, which involves kidnapping, shady investments, attempted murder, and the grandson of Ubangiba's last king. Agents actually consult reference books for essential background information, and a few literary allusions build character or relate to earlier Pollifax appearances. This fast-moving tale sports a lively, energetic style, much like its heroine, and should prove popular for light reading. . The Shadow Welfare State: Labor, Business, and the Politics of Health Care in the United States Gottschalk, Marie Cornell University Press 2000 0801437458 Hardcover VG+/NONE 1/7; 0.91 x 9.32 x 6.27; 288 pages; From Booklist. Several solid studies of the failure of the Clinton health reform campaign of the early '90s attempt to assess the role of all the key players. Gottschalk, a University of Pennsylvania political scientist, focuses on the interaction of labor and business in that debate. Her relatively narrow emphasis sheds light on the nature of (what remains of) the nation's hybrid public/private safety net and on how interests, ideas, and institutions interact in forming U. S. Social policy. Since the '40s, labor has been part of the key institutions of employment-based health insurance: Taft-Hartley plans, the Employee Retirement Income Security Act of 1974, and experience-rated insurance contracts. These institutions, together with the appealing idea of an "employer mandate" as a moderate approach and labor's (false) hope that business would support reform, pushed labor into a position that ignored the needs of millions of workers yet couldn't gain enough support to pass. A cogent, provocative analysis of a particular battle that also raises larger questions for the future. Mary Carroll. Copyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved . . Book Description. Why, in the recent campaigns for universal health care, did organized labor maintain its support of employer-mandated insurance? Did labor's weakened condition prevent it from endorsing national health insurance? Marie Gottschalk demonstrates here that the unions' surprising stance was a consequence of the peculiarly private nature of social policy in the United States. Her book combines a much-needed account of labor's important role in determining health care policy with a bold and incisive analysis of the American welfare state. . . Gottschalk stresses that, in the United States, the social welfare system is anchored in the private sector but backed by government policy. As a result, the private sector is a key political battlefield where business, labor, the state, and employees hotly contest matters such as health care. She maintains that the shadow welfare state of job-based benefits shaped the manner in which labor defined its policy interests and strategies. As evidence, Gottschalk examines the influence of the Taft-Hartley health and welfare funds, the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (E. R. I. S. A. ) , and experience-rated health insurance, showing how they constrained labor from supporting universal health care. . . Labor, Gottschalk asserts, missed an important opportunity to develop a broader progressive agenda. She challenges the movement to establish a position on health care that addresses the growing ranks of Americans without insurance, the restructuring of the U. S. Economy, and the political travails of the unions themselves. Price:

The Devil and Dr. Barnes: Portrait of an American Art Collector Greenfeld, Howard Viking Adult November 1, 1987 0670806501 Hardcover NF/VG+ 1/9 Book Weight (Lbs/Oz); 306 pages; From Publishers Weekly--Multimillionai re art collector Albert Barnes (1872-1951) wrote obscene letters to his enemies; he lashed art critics and dealers, and he insisted that he got rich through the discovery of a medicated silver solution that he, in fact, had merely promoted. The irascible chemist-turned-connois seur championed the Harlem Renaissance, yet he was often patronizing in his treatment of blacks. He housed his art collection in a Philadelphia suburb to educate the masses, but his foundation's rigid admissions policy has severely limited the public's access to the galleries. Author of bios of Caruso and Puccini, Greenfeld offers an entertaining, balanced profile of the self-made nabob whose art collection includes works by Renoir, Matisse, Picasso, Cezanne, Demuth, Glackens, Titian and Rubens. He concludes with a plea to the Barnes Foundation to liberalize its restrictive policies. First serial to Philadelphia magazine. Copyright 1987 Reed Business Information, Inc. --- From Library Journal--Astounding, captivating, and often amusing, this is a biography of doctor-inventor-connoisseur Albert Coombs Barnes, who used his self-made fortune to snub the American museum and gallery community from the turn of the century until his death in 1951. His quest for supremacy in the art world led to the creation of one of America's premier private collections. Greenfeld chronicles Barnes's eccentric behavior, unusual educational philosophy, and friendships with such notables as Gertrude and Leo Stein, John Dewey, and Henri Matisse. A fascinating, eye-opening account of art wars in early 20th-century America. Enthusiastically recommended. Stephen Allan Patrick, East Tennessee State Univ. Beyond Disability: Towards an Enabling Society (Open University Set Book) Hales, Gerald (editor) Sage Publications Ltd February 27, 1996 0803979576 Paperback G; Stamped Used on Page Edge; notes/highlighting throughout 1/0 Book Weight (Lbs/Oz); 9.1 x 6.1 x 0.6 inches; 208 pages; Book Description. An important new text, Beyond Disability draws together a wealth of experience to present theoretical and practical insights into the way in which society intervenes in the lives of disabled people, and considers how resources could be used to be more supportive and helpful. The contributors stress the social contexts within which disabilities become apparent, highlighting that disabled people: . . Only have practical difficulties in the area of life affected by their disability, and in other respects are no different from anyone else. . Are handicapped not by the parameters of their disability but by the demands and attitudes of society. . . This enlightening text demonstrates that society's interventions do not always achieve the aim of helping and supporting but can sometimes be counterproductive; at worst, they demean and diminish individuals. In the process of making suggestions for improving services, the contributors consider the p | | |
