Synchronicity: the Inner Path of Leadership Jaworski, Joseph Berrett-Koehler Publishers March 1996 188105294X Hardcover AN/AN 1/8 Book Weight (Lbs/Oz); 9.3 x 7.7 x 0.9 inches; 211 pages; From Library Journal. Jaworski, the son of Watergate special prosecutor Leon Jaworski, here presents his personal philosophy of life. As founder of the American Leadership Forum, Jaworski espouses the value of servant leadership, which calls for leadership that is relationship-orie nted, creative, and constructive. Additionally, he comments on the world economic situation. Regrettably, the author seems too self-absorbed at times, wandering from topic to topic without providing any insight. At one point, Jaworski claims, "We are all one, " but how does one apply that to leadership? Due to the lack of any practical ideas, this recording is not recommended. ? Mark Guyer, Stark Cty. Dist. Lib. , Canton, Ohio. Copyright 1997 Reed Business Information, Inc. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title. . Peter Senge, author of The Fifth Discipline. Falcons Nest on Skyscrapers (Let's-Read-And-Find-Out Science) Jenkins, Priscilla Belz Harpercollins Publishers May 1996 0060211040 Hardcover AN/AN 1/0 Book Weight (Lbs/Oz); Let's-Read-And-Find-Out Science Bks. ; 8.3 x 10.4 x 0.5 inches; 32 pages; From School Library Journal. Grade 2-4? A straightforward account of the first brood of peregrine falcon chicks to hatch in the wild in the eastern U. S. In 30 years? On a ledge of a Baltimore skyscraper. General facts about falcon behavior and habitat; explanations of how the peregrine population was affected by DDT; and scientists' efforts to save the species provide the background for the story of one bird. Scarlett had been raised at a special research facility, banded, and released into the wild. She landed on a skyscraper, waited five years for a mate, and raised her brood of four. Lloyd's excellent watercolor illustrations capture the variety of falcon positions from nesting to flight, and the artist's perspective of the cityscape as viewed from Scarlett's eyrie 33 stories above enhance the text. Additional information about five species of falcons and a list of places to observe them round out the presentation. A good introduction to birds of prey and how wildlife is dependent on the environment. ? Diane Nunn, Richard E. Byrd Elementary School, Glen Rock, NJ. Copyright 1996 Reed Business Information, Inc. . --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title. . From Booklist. Ages 5^-8. The story of the peregrine falcon's survival is told in this picture book from the Let's-Read-and-Find-Out Science series. Beginning with general information about the falcon's habits and its near extinction due to DDT, Jenkins describes scientists' efforts to preserve the species and reintroduce it into the wild. A high ledge on a Baltimore skyscraper provided shelter for Scarlett, the first of the peregrines raised in captivity to adapt to "the wild" and hatch her eggs, reestablishing the species in the eastern U. S. This appealing look at Scarlett, her trials, and her perseverance makes an involving tale that personalizes wildlife conservation without triviality or sensationalism. The last pages introduce five American falcons and a half-dozen places to contact for information about local falcon watches. Throughout the book, ink drawings with subtle watercolor washes offer panoramic views of countrysides and cityscapes as well as close-ups of Scarlett, her mate, and their brood. Carolyn Phelan Price:

Lift Every Voice and Sing Johnson, James Weldon Walker Books For Young Readers February 1, 1993 0802782507 Hardcover VG-/VG-; DJ pasted down; stray glue marks on flyleaf (no other indications of ex-lib). 1/4 Book Weight (Lbs/Oz); 11.2 x 8.3 x 0.4 inches; 36 pages; From Publishers Weekly. Between the sober linocuts and the devotional text, this adaptation of what was once called the Negro National Anthem fairly effuses seriousness of purpose. Lyrics from a song written by two schoolteacher brothers in 1900 in honor of Abraham Lincoln's birthday caption prints created in 1946 and '47 by the granddaughter of slaves; the emphasis here is on suffering, deliverance and gratitude to God. A picture of the victim of a hanging, for example, faces "We have come over a way that with tears has been watered / We have come, treading our path through the blood of the slaughtered. " The score is provided at the end. Throughout, two-color art yields black-and-blue borders, while that blue, an almost turquoise tone, splashes through some of the linocuts. Much like "The Star-Spangled Banner, " the production of this anthem is big on reverence and short on spontaneity. All ages. . Copyright 1993 Reed Business Information, Inc. . . From School Library Journal. Grade 6 Up? A rather superficial overview of the lives of the two great generals. In alternating chapters, Archer looks at Grant and Lee's formative years and early careers. He then highlights their roles in the war, occasionally stopping at particular battles to demonstrate each man's character through his actions. The final two chapters tell of the subjects' postwar lives. Unfortunately, the author spends more time on the Civil War than on these two fascinating and very different men, and the breakneck speed with which readers are taken through the conflict will certainly confuse those with little background in the subject. The coverage seems to favor Lee, even though efforts are made to demythologize him. All of his illnesses and injuries are covered in great depth. The author also seems to dwell on reports of Grant's drinking. The book is illustrated with two clusters of good-quality, black-and-white reproductions. Students looking for biographical material on these figures will find more information in Albert Marrin's Unconditional Surrender and Virginia's General (both Atheneum, 1994) . ? Elizabeth M. Annie Oakley Kasper, Shirl University Of Oklahoma Press March 2000 0806132442 Paperback G; No marks, but previous exposure to dampness resulted in page warping--no mold or stuck pages. Some corner wear. 1/0 Book Weight (Lbs/Oz); 8.5 x 5.5 x 0.7 inches; 304 pages; From Library Journal. Although thought of as a Westerner, Oakley was a very proper Ohioan who was determined to be the best in the very competitive world of sharpshooting. Kasper details Oakley's life and career, carefully documenting major points that have become lost in the legend, such as her decision to join Buffalo Bill's Wild West, her meeting with Sitting Bull, and the real reason why her hair turned white at age 41. This careful attention to documentation has yielded an account that is as accurate as existing sources allow and that supersedes all previous biographies. Presented in an enjoyable and readable style, this is strongly recommended for all public libraries. Specialists in the history of shooting sports, performing arts history, and the West will also find this book useful. . - Stephen H. Peters, Northern Michigan Univ. Lib. , Marquette. Edmund Burke: a Genius Reconsidered Kirk, Russell Intercollegiate Studies Institute June 1997 188292617X Hardcover AN/AN 1/5 Book Weight (Lbs/Oz); 8.6 x 5.8 x 1.1 inches; 285 pages; From the Publisher. Russell Kirk was a leading figure in the post-World War II revival of American interest in Edmund Burke. Today, no one who takes seriously the problems of society dares remain indifferent to "the first conservative of our time of troubles. " In Russell Kirk's words: "Burke's ideas interest anyone nowadays, including men bitterly dissenting from his conclusions. If conservatives would know what they defend, Burke is their touchstone; and if radicals wish to test the temper of their opposition, they should turn to Burke. " Kirk unfolds Burke's philosophy, showing how it revealed itself in concrete historical situations during the eighteenth century and how Burke, through his philosophy, "speaks to our age. "This volume makes vivid the four great struggles in the life of Burke: his efforts to reconcile England with the American colonies; his involvement in cutting down the domestic power of George III; his prosecution of Warren Hastings, the Governor-General of India; and his resistance to Jacobinism, the French Revolution's "armed doctrine. ". . From The Critics. Children's Literature. With a forward by Roger Scruton, this detailed biography presents the life and time of Edmund Burke in eleven lengthy chapters, including an epilogue about why he is studied. Born in Dublin in 1729, Burke spent most of his career in England as a conservative statesman and philosopher. An index, notes, biographical notes and a timeline are included. 1977, Intercollegiat e Studies Institute, $24.95. Ages 16 up. Reviewer: Gisela Jernigan Price:

Danny's Mystery Valentine Kunhardt, Edith Greenwillow 1987 0688068537 Hardcover VG+/VG-; Minor DJ creases, scuffs 0/13 Book Weight (Lbs/Oz); 0.2 x 8.2 x 10.2 inches; 24 pages; From Publishers Weekly. The earnest alligator from Danny's Birthday is back, trying to figure out who slipped a valentine under his door. He and his mother decide to find out. But his friends didn't do it, neither did the baker (who offers heart-shaped cookies) , the stationer (who has cut a string of hearts from paper) or the pizza man (whose pizza departs from the traditional round shape in honor of the day) . Back at home, the sender of the valentine is waiting for Dannyhis grandma. Danny is slightly less ingenuous in this new book, and it's not really clear why his mother takes him on the wild goose chase: she probably knows about the granny, and he's not interested in any other valentines. But Kunhardt's pictureswith a flat perspective, wavery black lines and offbeat paletteimpart a fresh appeal to a sweet mystery. Ages 3-6. . Copyright 1987 Reed Business Information, Inc. . From School Library Journal. PreSchool-Grade 1 Young Danny finds an unsigned Valentine on his floor, and mother alligator and son begin their neighborhood walk to find out who sent it. Everyone they speak to is making special valentines, from a heart-shaped snow design by Danny's friends to a valentine pizza by Mr. Mozzarella. Finally, Danny and his mother return home to find that it was Granny who sent the valentine. ``And she gives Danny a great big Valentine's Day hug. '' The present-tense text is almost flat in its simplicity, although is varied somewhat by the use of dialogue. Illustrations are child-like in their use of flat colors confined within bold black outlines, stylized animals, and odd proportions. The illustrations both correspond to and extend the text. Danny's minor mystery should be enjoyed in a Valentine's Day storyhour. The style and format are similar to Danny's Birthday (Greenwillow, 1986) . Maria B. The Legend of El Dorado Laan, Nancy Van Knopf Books For Young Readers July 23, 1991 0679801367 Hardcover NF/NF; Signed "To Craig--Enjoy! Nancy Van Laan 1993" 1/1 Book Weight (Lbs/Oz); 11 x 9.5 x 0.5 inches; 40 pages; From Publishers Weekly. Over the years, the name El Dorado has come to signify any place of fabulous wealth; the words also have a literal meaning--"the gilded man. " This story relates the intriguing legend of a king whose wife and daughter are bewitched by a mysterious serpent in Lake Guatavita and lured beneath its surface. Each year, the grieving monarch covers himself with gold dust and is rafted out to the middle of the lake. There, in an elaborate ritual, he tosses treasures into the water to remind the serpent of its promise to someday reunite him with his family. As a final gesture, the king dives into the lake, offering the gold dust from his body. One year he doesn't reappear--t he serpent has kept its promise. The splendid pairing of Van Laan's suave retelling and Vidal's richly colored illustrations--meticulously executed and imbued with a primitive charm--capture all the beauty and mysticism of a culture from long ago and far away. Ages 4-9. . Copyright 1991 Reed Business Information, Inc. . . From Kirkus Reviews. The conquistadors, as American schoolchildren have long been taught, sought vainly for El Dorado; here is the legend that inspired their dreams, based on the 1541 account of an Indian in Colombia. The wife and daughter of a wealthy Chibcha king are lured into the holy Lake Guatavita by an entrancing sea serpent. Desolate, the king pines and neglects his duties until the high priest assures him that his wife and daughter are well and happy under the lake; it is not yet time to join them, but an annual ceremony in which the king himself is gilded (hence ``El Dorado'') and fabulous jewels are given to the serpent will keep the kingdom safe. The author's handsome, lightly stylized art glows with jewel-like colors. Just right for giving added dimension to a unit on explorers.
