410 At My House  Miller, Margaret
Carousel 1989 0694002763 Board book VG
0/6 Book Weight (Lbs/Oz); 0.4 x 5.6 x 5.7 inches; 1 pages; From Publishers Weekly. To what many may consider a plethora of books in a similar format, Miller introduces her versions of board books featuring color photographs that depict familiar objects. The photographs are clear, sharply focused and vivid; that is more than can be said for the organizing principles governing the series. Each book has a theme, but babies and toddlers may be hard pressed to make the appropriate connections. At My House , for example, depicts a dog, a cat, a chair, a telephone, keys, a watch, a bird, a flower, a stroller, a potty, a television, a crayon, scissors and money. Perhaps if these objects were shown in the context of "my house, " their connection would be clearer. In another example, the first picture in Me and My Clothes depicts an infant wearing a diaper, but all of the clothes presented on the pages that follow are suitable for toddlers and preschoolers only. Ages 6 months-2 years. . Copyright 1988 Reed Business Information, Inc.

412 Nobody Rides the Unicorn  Mitchell, Adrian
Arthur A. Levine Books April 2000 0439112044 Hardcover F/F
1/1 Book Weight (Lbs/Oz); 10.1 x 10.2 x 0.4 inches; 32 pages; Amazon--. Zoe is a poor, orphaned beggar girl living on the outskirts of the kingdom of Joppardy. She is also the quietest, gentlest girl in the land, which is exactly what the king is looking for. He needs the horn of a unicorn, and according to the king's adviser Doctor Slythe, only sweet young girls can trap the fierce and elusive beasts. The king tricks Zoe into entering the deep forest with him and the doctor, and luring a unicorn with her innocent songs ("His coat is like snowflakes/ woven with silk. / When he goes galloping/ He flows like milk") . Just as a unicorn puts his head in her lap to sleep, hundreds of men attack and trap the beautiful animal. Zoe, furious at the deception, sets the unicorn free, and the "little nobody" is banished from the kingdom. With nowhere else to turn, she wanders off to find her unicorn: . Zoe said, "Me, I'm nobody. ". "Climb on my back, kind Nobody, " said the unicorn with his eyes. "For Nobody rides the unicorn. " . Zoe may have broken the laws of the kingdom, but she is abiding the laws of her conscience. Ultimately, what reader can deny that she has done the right thing? Poet Adrian Mitchell's lyrical text about a girl who, in following her heart, befriends a unicorn, meshes perfectly with the dark, velvety, mystical illustrations by Stephen Lambert. These are the kinds of pictures that stay with a reader for a lifetime. For every fan of myth and strong female leads, this story is just right. (Ages 6 to 9) . . . From Publishers Weekly. Impressionistic artwork creates a dreamy, surreal backdrop for this story of an orphan girl who beguiles a unicorn. The king of Joppardy learns from Doctor Slythe that he must obtain the horn of a unicorn in order to protect him from harm. The two deceptively persuade a waif named Zoe--"nobody's child"--to lure a unicorn with her gentle voice, but when she learns of the king's plans, she sets the unicorn free and is banished from the kingdom. She then makes her way to the "secret valley of the unicorns, " where her kindness is rewarded. Though Mitchell's (Maudie and the Green Children) prose is pedestrian in places, particularly Zoe's song to the unicorn ("His mind is peaceful as the grass. / He is the loveliest one of all/ And he lives behind the waterfall") , it also contains flashes of pure poetry ("The air was torn by trumpets, " signals the legendary beast's capture) . It's Lambert's (Bedtime) otherworldly illustrations that lift the book to a higher level. His sophisticated use of mist-filtered light and shadow, and his seamless blend of old-world elegance and hints of modern life, make this a cautionary tale with a sense of immediacy (a red car winds its way up to a medieval castle; the heroine and king wear contemporary clothing) . Mysterious visual themes are interwoven; a giraffe and a boatman with four geese make intermittent appearances. The enigmatic, lush imagery will haunt readers long after the somewhat forgettable story has ended. Ages 4-8. (Apr. ) . Copyright 2000 Reed Business Information, Inc.

415 Maggie Among the Seneca  Moore, Robin
Lippincott; 1st J. B. Lippincott 1990 0397324553 First Printing Hardcover NF/NF
0/12 Book Weight (Lbs/Oz); 22 cm.; 104 pages; From School Library Journal. It is the summer of 1778, and 16-year-old Maggie Callahan is traveling through central Pennsylvania in search of her aunt and uncle, her only surviving family. She was first introduced in The Bread Sister of Sinking Creek (Lippincott, 1990) , and this book doesn't tell readers how Maggie arrived in these woods alone. She is captured by the Seneca, adopted by them, given to a Seneca in marriage, watches him die from a wolf attack, gives birth to a baby, runs away from a British officer who tries to recapture her, loses her baby to an old mysterious Indian woman, and fights bitter cold and near starvation in making her way back to her aunt, whose tavern on the Allegheny she manages to find. So many things happen to Maggie that there is little space for anything else, and her strength through all of these adversities borders on the unbelievable. Also, three other main characters are not given the development they need. Frenchgirl, another adopted Seneca, is given only casual consideration, even though she is pivotal to Maggie's life in the tribe. Firefly, Frenchgirl's brother and Maggie's husband, is a completely mysterious character. He is described as blond and blue-eyed, but readers are not told if he is Frenchgirl's natural brother--and if he is, why he can't speak English as she can. And an eccentric old woman appears to be nothing more than Moore's device to take Maggie's baby from her so she can make a clean break from the Seneca. The prose is flawed, and many of the descriptive phrases are overdone. Although the book's relatively easy reading level makes it accessible to middle-grade readers, many of the events will be lost on them, or will be beyond their emotional ken. --Jane Marino, White Plains Public Library, NY. Copyright 1990 Reed Business Information, Inc. . Card catalog description. Maggie Callahan journeys across the rugged Pennsylvania frontier to find her kin but, just before she reaches her destination, she is taken captive by a band of Seneca warriors and forced to travel with them along the war trail. . Book Description. Maggie Callahan sets out across the rugged Pennsylvania frontier in search of her Irish Aunt Franny. But the wilderness is filled with danger -- Maggie is taken captive by a band of Seneca Indian warriors, and forced to travel north with them along the war trail. . Afraid for her life and desperate to escape, Maggie must find a way to survive in the Seneca village at the trail's end. The Seneca ways are strange to Maggie. Theirs is a world of the hunt and the harvest, of ferocious wolves, of war paint and spirits, where no one understands her words, no one knows her name is Maggie. Yet it is also a world of majestic beauty, of harmony among a people, and the surprise of love. When this new life is threatened and Maggie is faced with a devastating loss, she begins to see just how much of her the Seneca have claimed. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.; Signed by Author

417 700 Kids on Grandpa's Farm  Morris, Ann
Dutton Juvenile February 1, 1994 0525451625 Hardcover NF/NF; Minor stray pen marks on flyleaf
0/13 Book Weight (Lbs/Oz); 8.8 x 8.2 x 0.5 inches; 32 pages; From School Library Journal. Kindergarten-Grade 3-An interesting photo essay about a goat farm. The owner's three grandchildren are shown touring the farm and playing with the kids. Feeding and care are discussed in the text, which consists of two to three sentences per page. The last half of the book dwells mainly on milking the animals and on the production of cheese. The narrative follows the large, clear, full-color photos very closely, so that there is no need for captions. Unfortunately, there is no pronunciation guide, and some of the vocabulary, e. G. , "pasteurizer, " "carousel, " and "culture, " might be unfamiliar to readers. A good choice for nonfiction picture-book collections. . Eldon Younce, Harper Elementary School, KS. Techniques and tools are clearly explained, as are working with color and exploring design ideas. 454 No Ordinary Joe: the Biography of Joe Paterno  O'Brien, Michael
Rutledge Hill Press August 1998 155853668X Hardcover AN/AN
1/10 Book Weight (Lbs/Oz); 339 pages; From Publishers Weekly. Certainly one of the best-known coaches in college football, Paterno became an assistant at Penn State in 1950 and head coach in 1966. And he has stayed there ever since, despite offers from both colleges and professional teams. Through the years he has compiled a record of 298-77-3, but is probably more respected because of his insistence that the aim of college is primarily a college education and only secondarily a headline on the sports page, so he and his staff drive their players as hard for academic excellence as for gridiron success. Paterno no longer uses the term much, but after a couple of years as head coach he began to preach the gospel of the Grand Experiment, adding to his reputation as a friend of the intellectuals (he's a Brown graduate himself) . It's difficult for an author to avoid writing a hagiography about Paterno, but O'Brien (Hesburgh) , a history professor at the University of Wisconsin-Fox Valley, tries, although he finds few warts. The only objection is the structure of the book, which interrupted the history of the team for four chapters of analysis and details about the man and his family and then returns to the main subject in the closing chapter. It's as if O'Brien were afraid the material in that excursus would not hold reader interest. . Copyright 1998 Cahners Business Information, Inc.
