505 The Demon Spirit (The Demonwars Trilogy, Book 2)  Salvatore, R. A.
Del Rey March 24, 1998 0345391519 Hardcover VG+/VG+; Minor spine cocking (NOT Ex-Lib)
2/0 Book Weight (Lbs/Oz); 9.6 x 6.7 x 1.9 inches; 465 pages; Amazon--. The Demon trilogy by R. A. Salvatore began with The Demon Awakens and continues with The Demon Spirit. Corona is a fantasy world regularly menaced by the "demon dactyl" who organizes the usual suspects--goblins, dwarfs, giants--in hope of wiping out humanity. Having been comprehensively blown up in book one, the now bodiless demon resorts to corrupting the soul of the abbot who is Corona's chief religious leader. It's an easy task, since despite a few good monks the church is already a murderous, hypocritical outfit. . On the other side, Elbryan the elf-trained warrior and his magic-wielding lady are busy cleaning up the increasingly disorganized remnants of the demon's armies, with skilled assistance from elf and thief companions. The magic comes from stones and jewels with various interesting powers, liberated from the church by a renegade monk in book one. This annoys the Abbot no end, and his "Brother Justice" assassins are hot on the stones' trail, bumping off rival clerics and innocent bystanders en route. . There's plenty of slick incidental adventure and skirmishing, and even an exciting raid on the torture chambers of the biggest and best-defended abbey. Meanwhile the battle lines are being rearranged: the fight is no longer against the demon but the now demon-influenced church, with the final clash scheduled for the concluding volume The Demon Apostle. Fast-moving commercial fantasy that delivers action rather than misty enchantment. --David Langford, Amazon. Co. Uk . --This text refers to the . Mass Market Paperback. Edition. . 508 Kundalini Tales  Sauder, Richard
Adventures Unlimited Press August 1998 0932813615 Paperback NF
1/5; 10 x 7 x 0.6 inches; 236 pages; From the Publisher: This page-turning follow-up to the popular Underground Bases and Tunnels details significant personal episodes of: spontaneous spiritual awakening-- out-of-body journeys-- encounters with secretive governmental powers-- unambiguous daylight sightings of UFOs-- provocative research about the occult under-pinnings of the U. S. Space program. A breakthrough section of the book examines actual U. S. Patents that have been granted for technology that makes mind and thought manipulation possible from a remote distance. So convincing is Sauder's treatment of this topic, that "electronic machinery" must now be added to "temporal lobe disorder" and "psychosis" as possible causes for "voices in the head". Included are chapters on the secret space program and a 130-page appendix of patents and schematic diagrams of secret technology and mind control devices.

520 The Last Full Measure (Ballantine Reader's Circle)  Shaara, Jeff
Ballantine Books April 27, 1999 0345425480 Paperback NF; Bookplate
1/3 Book Weight (Lbs/Oz); Ballantine Reader's Circle Series; 8.2 x 5.6 x 1.1 inches; 576 pages; Amazon--. Author Jeff Shaara rounds out the Civil War trilogy started by his late father Michael Shaara, whose book The Killer Angels describes the Battle of Gettysburg. Just as Jeff Shaara's Gods and Generals covers action prior to Gettysburg, The Last Full Measure picks up with Confederate General Robert E. Lee's retreat from Pennsylvania and continues through the end of the war. Shaara focuses on the characters of Lee and Union commander Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain, both of whom play prominent roles in the earlier books. He also introduces a new one: Ulysses S. Grant, the Union general who would finally defeat the South--something no soldier before him could manage. The Last Full Measure is often exciting and poignant, and fans of The Killer Angels and Gods and Generals won't be disappointed. --John Miller. --This text refers to the . Hardcover. Edition. . From Publishers Weekly. Concluding the Civil War trilogy that began with his father Michael's Pulitzer-winning The Killer Angels, Shaara (Gods and Generals) chronicles Lee's retreat from Gettysburg and his valiant efforts to defend northern Virginia from Grant's superior, better-supplied forces. Seen alternately through the eyes of Lee, Grant and Maine abolitionist Colonel Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain, the narrative begins with the successful Union ambush at Bristoe Station in October 1863. It then details Lee's 18-month cat-and-mouse game as he outmaneuvers Grant, despite overwhelming odds and terrible deprivation, concludes with Lee's surrender at Appomattox. Impressively researched, this deeply affecting work can't be faulted for inaccuracy or lack of detail. But the occasionally coarse grain of Shaara's characterizations is a problem. Haunted by Stonewall Jackson's ghost, 56-year-old Lee frequently appears to be a semisenile neurotic. Grant, more concerned about his supply of cigars than battle losses, comes across as a dolt. This tendency toward caricature notwithstanding, Shaara has produced a stirring epigraph to his father's remarkable novel. 523 The Sea Shall Embrace Them: the Tragic Story of the Steamship Arctic  Shaw, David W.
Free Press May 7, 2002 0743222172 First Edition; First Printing Hardcover VG+/VG+; Signed by author on title page; Minor DJ curling
1/5 Book Weight (Lbs/Oz); 9.6 x 6.4 x 0.9 inches; 256 pages; Amazon--. By the mid-19th century, steamships were eclipsing traditional sailing ships in the lucrative transatlantic trade. The largest of these, the American Arctic, collided with a smaller vessel in 1854 with a frightful, and unnecessary, loss of life. David W. Shaw's The Sea Shall Embrace Them tells the story of this disaster, eerily similar in many ways to the later sinking of the Titanic. Shaw lays out the immediate and secondary causes of the disaster: bad weather, no established shipping lanes, the ship's owners' preference for speed rather than prudence, and an appalling lack of safety precautions. As well, he describes the suffering and grotesque deaths of many aboard and dozens of acts of pure cowardice on the part of the crew. The writing for the most part is vivid and effective, though the physical layout of the ship is somewhat murky. The story of the Arctic is not only sad and the tragedy avoidable, but one that, as Shaw points out, would be repeated many times in the decades to follow. --H. O'Billovitch. . From Library Journal. Maritime writer Shaw (Inland Passage) believes that the 1850s were the "glory days" of the American transatlantic steamship trade. However, during that same period, the competition among international steamship lines to achieve the fastest transatlantic passage created a " `wicked recklessness of speed' in all weather and circumstances. " Shaw suggests that such competition coupled with the common practice of having steamers leave port without enough lifeboats for every person aboard was the overriding cause of disasters like the 1854 wreck of the Collins Line steamship Arctic. Based on firsthand testimony of the few survivors, Shaw's carefully researched account is a vivid portrait of gallantry and cowardice as hundreds of passengers battled for survival in the frigid waters off the coast of Newfoundland; it also provides intriguing insight into an important chapter in the history of the U. S. Merchant marine. For Shaw, the collision at sea between the Arctic and the French steamship Vesta is much more than a chronicle of human disaster. The far-reaching consequences of that event foreshadowed the moment in history when, Shaw writes, "Britain, France, and Germany surged ahead in the transatlanti c steamship trade" and the United States "turned inward and put her back to the sea. 526 Eva Le Gallienne: a Biography  Sheehy, Helen
Knopf October 8, 1996 0679411178 Hardcover VG+/VG+; Owner's address label on flyleaf
2/3 Book Weight (Lbs/Oz); 9.6 x 6.7 x 1.6 inches; 529 pages; Amazon--. For modern theater, the loss of Eva Le Gallienne was particularly tragic. A star in every sense, La Gallienne was a director and muse of top playwrights, a translator of Ibsen, and a founder of the American repertory theater movement. Born in 1899, she cut a wide swath through the theatrical world in the first half of the century. This is the second biography of Le Gallienne to appear in recent years, and Helen Sheehy tackles her larger-than-life subject with verve and thoroughness. . . From Publishers Weekly. Eva Le Gallienne (1899-1991) had this in common with her favorite Ibsen character, Hedda Gabler: she refused to be oppressed by a sexist society that limited her freedom. Luckily, Le Gallienne never developed a penchant for pistols. Instead, she became an accomplished performer and a master at building nonprofit repertory theater companies. Sheehy's (Margo, 1989) account of Le Gallienne's life, drawn mostly from the actress's personal papers, is the perfect combination of professional triumphs and defeats and personal anecdotes. Le Gallienne's childhood is well documented here, but Sheehy refrains from covering insignificant events. She shows how Le Gallienne's parents' tempestuous marriage, which ended in bitter divorce, helped lay the foundation for many of her own adult relationships. Le Gallienne was raised by an independent, self-sufficient mother and nanny. Her father, an aloof alcoholic, had little positive influence on her, and Sheehy hints that he may have sexually abused his daughter. As an adult, Le Gallienne's support system consisted mainly of women; she was a lesbian who didn't hide her sexuality to further her career. Sheehy re-creates for the reader Le Gallienne's love of acting and directing while avoiding the litany of theatrical reviews that mars too many performing-arts biographies. Sarah Bernhardt and Eleonora Duse were Le Gallienne's heroes, and the author's descriptions of how her subject absorbed their professional technique and expert advice are inspiring. Early in her career, she rejected Broadway's commercial theater, and she went on to lead several repertory companies. Sheehy carefully documents each experience, offering insight into the rewards and heartbreaks associated with Le Gallienne's lifelong struggle to firmly establish repertory theater in the United States. In this balanced, carefully researched biography of an actress who defied convention, Sheehy has perfectly staged Le Gallienne's life. Photos. . Copyright 1996 Reed Business Information, Inc.

529 Global Gods: Exploring the Role of Religions in Modern Societies  Shenk, David W.
Herald Press 1995 0836190068 Paperback VG
1/9 Book Weight (Lbs/Oz); 8.9 x 6.0 x 0.9 inches; 400 pages; From Library Journal. Though the title here suggests that this is a freshman college textbook on comparative religions, it is actually an overt Christian investigation of the strengths and weaknesses of Buddhism, Christianity, Islam, Maxism, and, to a smaller extent, Hinduism and the African religions. The author's approach is nonsystematic, and his personal observations and experiences are interwoven throughout the text, making it seem as if the book was compiled from lectures. His treatment of the tenets of each faith is factual and by and large fair, though not especially revealing or insightful. Read as a Christian's ecumenical introduction to other faiths, the book is adequate for the job but will disappoint all but the most general readers. . Glenn Masuchika, Chaminade Univ. 544 Migrations and Cultures: a World View  Sowell, Thomas
Basic Books March 1997 0465045898 Paperback NF; Minor PES, otherwise AN
1/6 Book Weight (Lbs/Oz); 8.1 x 5.3 x 1.1 inches; 528 pages; Amazon--. To future generations, the late 20th century may come to be known as the time of the DPs: Displaced Persons. Migration and refugeeism are raising inflammatory issues from unified Germany to the Tex-Mex border. Into this whirlpool of half-truths, sermons, prejudices, and fears dives Hoover Institution economist and syndicated columnist Thomas Sowell. It is not necessary to agree with all of Sowell's views to admire his imposing attempt to arrive at a theory of migration and culture. Or to succumb to his fascinating tales of how immigrants from Germany, Japan, China, and other countries have coped--and excelled--o n strange new shores. . --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title. . From Publishers Weekly. Sowell (Race and Culture) , senior fellow at Stanford's Hoover Institution, takes a sweeping look at major world migrations, his aim being to "provide revealing glimpses of the enormous role of cultural heritages and their far-reaching implications. " Focusing on the Germans, Japanese, Italians, Chinese, Jews and Indians (why not the Irish, too? ) , he traces the migratory pattern of each group and examines how it has affected the countries where its members settled, as well as the effects of migration on the immigrants themselves over time. Interesting insights abound in this study. For instance, the xenophobia of Westerners toward Chinese is equally as strong among China's Asian neighbors; northern Italians in their new homelands asked to be counted separately from their southern compatriots; German Jews in America, while extending charity to their less fortunate Eastern European brethren, kept a social distance from them. Sowell's treatment is so comprehensive and detailed, with a plethora of footnotes on almost every page, that his book will be of particular interest to specialists. .
